Foam rolling breaks down the fascia surrounding the muscles so they can move more effectively. If you've ever heard the old adage 'you can't stretch a tight muscle' that's the truth. It's the fascia that's protecting it. Break that down and make it more pliable, the muscle will then be more pliable and able to function/stretch.
